Mercy & Grace

with Pastor Roger Ulman

Well, greetings, fellow pastors. It’s an honor to be with you today.  My name is Roger Ullman, and I’m from Calvary Chapel in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I was asked to talk about and to encourage you with the topics of grace and mercy.  Two great topics.

Living and Leading in Grace and Mercy

I have learned that as a believer in Jesus Christ, my whole life is daily consumed with the grace that God gave me as creator, the grace he gave me in salvation. And what means an awful lot to me is the grace to be a pastor and to be merciful. And it’s been just wonderful.

A Word of Encouragement

I want to encourage all of you and remind you all that you also have received such blessings—these spiritual blessings. I want to encourage you all in the future that if you have ventured off from doing ministry in a gracious and merciful way, you would return to that.

A Personal Reflection

As I reflect back, and when I really took my faith seriously, it was back in the tail end of the Jesus movement, and it was so exciting and God was moving powerfully. And one of the things that was so dominant in that revival was the grace and mercy that was just kind of in the air. It’s how people treated one another. It came from the pulpit, and the fruit came from that.

A Question for Us All

So my question to you is, brother, as you minister, as you serve, as you pastor:

  • What other choice do you have?
  • What other way should you and I do ministry?

A Scriptural Reminder

I think of Paul addressing Timothy and Titus. In 1st and 2nd Timothy and Titus, the first chapter of each book, Paul tells these young men:

  • “Grace, mercy, and peace from the Lord Jesus Christ.”

That’s what Paul wanted for these young men. And so I want to encourage you all as we reflect on these three books. You know, it’s the books on leadership that Paul said that to these men.

Let’s Lead With Grace and Mercy

And I’m encouraging you to remember God’s grace, God’s mercy, and to treat God’s people that way.

A Grateful Heart

I want you all to know that I love being a Calvary Chapel pastor. I love Calvary Chapel pastors. I’m so grateful that God brought me into this movement of the Holy Spirit because of these wonderful truths of grace and mercy, not only from God, but also how you and I, as pastors, give each other that. And we also speak God’s word in a gracious and merciful way.

Brothers,  please continue in doing ministry that way because there’s no doubt in my mind that if we do,  we will hear on Judgment Day,  “well done, good and faithful servant”.

Calvary Chapel pastor,  I love you.  You’ve been an inspiration to me, and I’m grateful for your example of grace and mercy. Thank you.
